Questions in Present Continous Tense

In this lesson, we will learn how to

  • Make simple questions in the present continuous tense
  • Make WH questions in the present continuous tense

Questions in Present Continous Tense

Questions in Present Continous Tense are used to ask about
actions that are happening right now or are in progress

Questions starting with 'Am':

The answers to these questions DO NOT begin with 'YES' or 'NO'

'WHAT' questions are used to get information about something or someone:

‘WHAT’ QUESTIONS SAMPLE ANSWERS What is he wearing? He is wearing a blue shirt. What is she doing? She is reading a book. What are they listening? They are listening to music.

‘WHO’ questions are used to ask about a particular person:

‘WHO’ QUESTIONS SAMPLE ANSWERS Who is watching television? Amit is watching television. Who is reading the newspaper? Shruti is reading the newspaper. Who is listening the music? Mohan and Manoj are listening to music.

‘WHEN’ questions are used to know about the time of a particular action:

‘WHEN’ QUESTIONS SAMPLE ANSWERS When are you going to the market? I am going to the market in the afternoon. When is Mohan coming home? Mohan is coming home today. When are we watching the movie? We are watching the movie in the evening.

'WHY' questions are used to find out the reason:

‘WHY’ QUESTIONS SAMPLE ANSWERS Why are you driving fast? I am driving fast because I am late for work. Why is he wearing the new shirt? He is wearing the new shirt because he is going to a party. Why are they standing at the bus stop? They are standing at the bus stop because they are waiting for a bus.

'WHICH' questions are used to ask about one thing (out of many things):

‘WHICH’ QUESTIONS SAMPLE ANSWERS Which book are you reading? I am reading a book on history of America. Which game is he playing? He is playing snakes and ladders. Which bus is going to Bhopal? The blue bus is going to Bhopal.

'WHERE' questions are used to ask about the place or position:

‘WHERE’ QUESTIONS SAMPLE ANSWERS Where is Pooja going? Pooja is going to Jaipur. Where are they coming from? They are coming from Lucknow. Where are the children playing? The children are playing in the park.

‘How’ questions are used to ask about the manner.
‘How much’ is used to ask about price.
‘How many’ is used to ask about quantity.
‘How long’ is used to ask about duration of time.

‘HOW’ QUESTIONS SAMPLE ANSWERS How are you going to office? I am going to office by car. How is Amit feeling now? Amit is feeling better How many boys are playing football? Five boys are playing football.
