Use positive and negative tag questions

• Use positive and negative tag questions

Tag Questions are used to confirm information which is already
available.
For example:
You live in New Delhi, don’t you

He is a student, isn’t he?

We use negative tag questions with positive statements and positive tag questions with negative statements.
NEGATIVE TAG QUESTION POSITIVE TAG QUESTION Mohan likes ice cream, doesn’t he? Pooja doesn’t study in school, does she? We are going to the airport, aren’t we? This is Maya’s house, isn’t it?

Note that we use a negative tag with a positive statement

Positive statement Negative tag You are ready, aren’t you? He can swim, can’t he? I should wear jeans to work, shouldn't I? We (do) go there sometimes, don’t we? It is raining hard,isn’t it? They will come with us, won’t they? The play went off well, didn’t it? He was speaking too fast, wasn’t he? They have been working all night, haven’t they? Raman has been ill for a week, hasn’t he? The neighbors had seen the thief, hadn’t they?

Note that we use a positive tag with a negative statement

Negative statement Positive tag You aren't ready, are you? He can't swim, can he? I shouldn’t wear jeans to work, should I? We don't ever go there, do we? It isn't raining, is it? They won't come with us, will they? The play didn't go off well, did it? He wasn't speaking clearly, was he? They haven't been working all night, have they? Raman hasn't sent a leave application,has he? The neighbors hadn't seen him, had they?
