Countable and Uncountable nouns

In this lesson, we will learn how to

  • Countable and Uncountable nouns
  • Usage of 'Many', 'Much', 'A few', 'A little', 'A lot of', 'Some'

COUNTABLE NOUNS

Nouns which we can count are called countable nouns for
example:

5 books
10 pens
2 boys
Many bags

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Nouns which we cannot count are called uncountable nouns
for example:

little sugar
much coffee
some rice

Let us look at some examples

COUNTABLE NOUNS
have plural forms
 UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
don’t have a plural form
 
Book – Books Sugar Pen – Pens Coffee Boy – Boys Time Bag – Bags Tea

We use 'MANY' for Countable Nouns.

I have many books.
There are many pens on the table.
There are many boys in the class.
Mohan has many bags.
There are many babies in the room.

We use 'MUCH' for Uncountable Nouns.

I don’t like too much sugar.
How much coffee is there in the cup?
I don’t have much time today.
I drink too much tea every day.
How much rice do you want?

With ‘cups of coffee’ or ‘plates of rice’, we use ‘Many’
as ‘cups’ and ‘plates’ are countable nouns

How many cups of coffee do you drink?
How many plates of rice do you eat?

We use ‘A few’ for Countable Nouns

I have a few books.
There are a few pens on the table.
There are a few boys in the class.
Mohan has a few bags.
There are a few babies in the room.

We use ‘A little’ for Uncountable Nouns

Would you like a little sugar?
I drink a little coffee every morning.
I have a little time today.
Do you want a little tea?
I have a little rice for lunch.

With ‘cups of coffee’ or ‘plates of rice’, we use ‘A few’ as ‘cups’ and ‘plates’ are countable nouns

Let’s have a few cups of coffee.
Please give your friends a few plates of rice.

‘A lot of’ and ‘Some’ can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns.

There are a lot of boys in the class.
There is a lot of sugar in the coffee.
There are some pens on the table.
There is some rice on the plate.
