To ask questions using the past perfect tense.

In this lesson, we will learn

  • To make positive and negative statements using the past perfect tense.
  • To ask questions using the past perfect tense.
The Past Perfect tense is used to talk about an action that completed before another action or time in the past.
For example:
I had read the newspaper by 8 a.m.

I had cleaned the house before I went to play.
Subject HAD Verb(past participle) Rest of the sentence I had finished the homework before the teacher came. He had finished the homework before the teacher came. She had finished the homework before the teacher came. Manoj had finished the homework before the teacher came. Sheetal had finished the homework before the teacher came. You had finished the homework before the teacher came. We had finished the homework before the teacher came. They had finished the homework before the teacher came. Manoj and I had finished the homework before the teacher came. Neha and Manoj had finished the homework before the teacher came.These sentences talk about the action in the past (finish the homework) that completed before the second action in the past (teacher came).
Subject HAD Verb(past participle) Rest of the sentence I had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. He had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. She had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. Manoj had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. Sheetal had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. You had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. We had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. They had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. Manoj and I had eaten lunch by 2 p.m. Neha and Manoj had eaten lunch by 2 p.m.These sentences talk about the action in the past (eaten lunch) that completed before a time in the past(2 p.m.).

Negative Sentences

Subject HAD NOT Verb(past participle) Rest of the sentence had not cleaned the house before the guests came. He had not cleaned the house before the guests came. She had not cleaned the house before the guests came. Manoj had not cleaned the house before the guests came. Sheetal had not cleaned the house before the guests came. You had not cleaned the house before the guests came. We had not cleaned the house before the guests came. They had not cleaned the house before the guests came. Manoj and I had not cleaned the house before the guests came. Neha and Manoj had not cleaned the house before the guests came.These sentences talk about the action in the past (clean the house) that did not complete before the second action in the past (guests came).
We can also use ‘hadn’t’ in place of ‘had not’.
