Make positive and negative statements using ‘was’ and ‘were’

In this lesson, we will learn how to

  • Make positive and negative statements using ‘was’ and ‘were’
  • Ask questions using ‘was’ and ‘were’

We use ‘was’ and ‘were

We use ‘was’ and ‘were’ when we make sentences about the past where there is no action

With the subjects ‘I’, ‘He’, ‘She’ or any other person, we use ‘was’

SUBJECT WAS REST OF THE SENTENCE was born in 1960. He was born in 1960. She was born in 1960. Manoj/ Sheetal was born in 1960.

With the subjects ‘We’, ‘You’, ‘They’ or more than one person,
we use ‘were’

SUBJECT WERE REST OF THE SENTENCE We were born in 1960. You were born in 1960. They were born in 1960. Manoj/ Sheetal were born in 1960.

Let us look at some more examples:

SUBJECT WAS REST OF THE SENTENCE WAS scared before the examination results. He WAS scared before the examination results. She WAS scared before the examination results. Manoj/ Sheetal WAS scared before the examination results.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES
With the subjects ‘I’, ‘He’, ‘She’ or any other person, we use
‘was not’

SUBJECT WASN'T REST OF THE SENTENCE wasn't happy yesterday. He wasn't happy yesterday. She wasn't happy yesterday. Sheetal wasn't happy yesterday.

With the subjects ‘I’, ‘He’, ‘She’ or any other person, we use
‘were not’

SUBJECT WEREN'T REST OF THE SENTENCE We weren't happy yesterday. You weren't happy yesterday. They weren't happy yesterday. Manoj and Sheetal weren'thappy yesterday.
