To ask questions using the past continuous tense.

In this lesson, we will learn

  • To make positive and negative statements using the past continuous tense.
  • To ask questions using the past continuous tense.
In the Past Continuous tense, the action was going on at a certain
time in the past. This tense is used to talk about an action at a
particular time in the past.
Subject Was Verb + ing Rest of the sentence I was playing football in the evening yesterday. He was playing football in the evening yesterday. She was playing football in the evening yesterday. Manoj was playing football in the evening yesterday. Sheetal was playing football in the evening yesterday.With the subjects ‘I’, ‘He’, ‘She’ or any other person, we use ‘was’ + verb+ing.
In these sentences, the action (play football) was going on at a particular time in the past (yesterday evening).
Subject Were Verb + ing Rest of the sentence We Were playing football in the evening yesterday. You Were playing football in the evening yesterday. They Were playing football in the evening yesterday. Manoj and I Were playing football in the evening yesterday. Manoj and Mohit Were playing football in the evening yesterday.With the subjects ‘We’, ‘You’, ‘They’ or more than one person, we use ‘were’ + verb+ing.
In these sentences, the action (play football) was going on at a particular time in the past (yesterday evening).
Subject Was not Verb + ing Rest of the sentence was not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. He was not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. She was not studyingMathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. Manoj was not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. Sheetal was not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday.With the subjects 'I’, ‘He’, ‘She’ or any other person, we use ‘was not’ + verb+ing. We can also use Wasn't in place of was not.
In these sentences, the action (study Mathematics) was not going on at a particular time in the past (5 p.m. yesterday).
Subject Were not Verb + ing Rest of the sentence We were not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. You were not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. They were notstudying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. Manoj and I were not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday. Sheetal and Mohit were not studying Mathematics at 5 p.m. yesterday.With the subjects ‘We’, ‘You’, ‘They’ or more than one person, we use ‘were not’ + verb+ing. We can also use weren't in place of were not.
In these sentences, the action (study Mathematics) was not going on at a particular time in the past (5 p.m. yesterday).

Were Subject Verb + ing Rest of the sentence Were we reading the newspaper in the morning? Were you reading the newspaper in the morning? Were they reading the newspaper in the morning? Were Manoj reading the newspaper in the morning? Were Sheetal reading the newspaper in the morning?These questions are used to ask if the action (reading the newspaper) was going on at a particular time in the past (in the morning).
